UCT Sponsors First IISME Summer Fellowship

Harjinder Basi, Steve Chaffey, Dave Zenk, Joanna Rosales
MENLO PARK, CA, August 27, 2001 — Ultra Clean Technology, a leading supplier of gas and liquid delivery solutions for the semiconductor process equipment industry, sponsored its first fellowship this summer through the Industry Initiatives for Math and Science Education program (IISME). IISME offers professional development opportunities for K-14 teachers in the greater Bay Area by placing them in industry positions, or fellowships, for the summer.
Founded in 1985 by CEO’s of 13 leading Bay Area companies, IISME has placed over 1,300 teachers in summer fellowships, reaching over one million Bay Area students. Teachers in this innovative program gain experience and knowledge they can put to immediate use when they return to their classrooms in the fall.
This year's summer fellow, Harjinder Basi (pictured above left), is a sixth-grade math teacher. In just eight short weeks, she developed a self-paced program for manufacturing skills training. The program, the first of its kind in the company, was designed to help new employees come up to speed quickly and will be an ongoing reference guide for current staff. Dave Zenk, manufacturing supervisor and Harj's mentor, helped shape the program from strict lecture format requiring classroom instruction to a flexible, on-line tool that better fits UCT’s just-in-time training needs.
While working at UCT, Harjinder learned first-hand the skills and competencies needed for success in a high technology environment. She plans to share what she has learned with her class through a comprehensive lesson plan. This plan will instruct students on the finer points of using electronic spreadsheets to solve complex math problems.
Clarence Granger, UCT's President and Chief Operating Officer, praised IISME and the results achieved through UCT's participation in the fellowship program. "This program is a win-win for UCT and the local community. As a company, we gain the services of a dedicated teacher, and we also help improve Bay Area education. I enthusiastically endorse the IISME program."
